Stealing the throne that Gary Barlow thought was rightfully his post-Take That, Robbie Williams hit the big time with Angels and has been winning (mostly - he's not a movie star yet, which irks him) and singing about it ever since. Like all the great working class crooners, from Dean Martin to Rod Stewart, women swoon at the mention of his name and, bizarrely, most men will still give him the benefit of the doubt. Not only can he sing, but the voice from Stoke is also an accomplished showman, his concerts being a showcase for his ability to hare around the stage while smirking and showing off his hairy chest.
Aware of the paths followed by all enduring pop acts, Robbie is constantly attempting to reinvent himself - witness his swing period - but somehow always comes back to his trademark combination of a winning grin and a heart-on-sleeve lyric.
Testament to the faith placed in him by his record company, Robbie holds the all-time record for the fastest-selling male solo record, Sing When You're Winning, which shifted one million copies in 29 days. Whether, like Rod Stewart, he'll still be winning and singing in ten years time remains to be seen.
