Fans of Ridley’s younger brother, Tony Scott, will be happy to hear he was the man to remake the 1974 film Taking Of Pelham 1 2 3. With his slick, quick-cut editing and love of action, he breathes a unique and momentous pace into any script he tackles, and this is certainly the case here. Saying that, there is one moment of complete action overkill, where a frenetic police convoy races and crashes (quite spectacularly) its way through the streets of NYC with the multi-million dollar ransom money in tow. But, let’s be honest, the undeniable truth is the real draw of the 2009 film is the stellar cast ensemble of Denzel Washington, John Travolta, James Gandolfini and John Turturro. It goes without saying they all sit nicely in their roles. Travolta is hardcore, and it works well, whilst Washington infuses the kind of humanity needed to ground a film like this, and his calm and understated power is mesmerising - as always.

“Très charmant” is the immediate response that springs to mind, after watching any work associated with the delicate creature that is Audrey Tautou. However, gone are the wide-eyed, innocent days of Amelie, here, as Tautou grows up in a cynical man’s world at the beginning of the 20th Century. Tautou plays no-nonsense and fiercely independent Chanel - before rising to fashion prominence - exuding an intoxicating presence of fragile femininity, sardonic wit, and ferocious stubbornness and fervour that always makes this French star a great joy to watch in both the good times and the bad.

Producer extraordinaire Jerry Bruckheimer working with 3D guinea pigs who are trying to save the world sounds like an elaborate fantasy sequence. Even Bruckheimer working in 3D sounds too good to be true. But when you’ve got the special effects talent behind the directing of Disney’s new family adventure from Bruckheimer’s right-hand effects man, Hoyt Yeatman, you expect a winner in the cutesy, cuddly animal genre with mind-blowing visuals. And you get it. G-Force is furry, frenetic family fun with scores of big laughs, big-chase action, and THE best 3D effects ever seen (so far) on the big screen that will quite literally blow you away.
